Say It Loud, I’m Zune and I’m Proud

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Let it be stated for the record that Josh Bomb tienen cojones. The courageous Zune owner took a perfectly good Belkin protective case for the gadget and modded it to make its Zune-ness (Zune-ocity?) more prominent. Unavoidable, even.

This is in contrast to weasels like me who rely on protective cases for a certain bit of anonymity.

Hot or Not: Estonia laptop edition

Get this: an Estonian newspaper has teamed up with HP to find the country’s most unsightly laptop, and while the one pictured above hasn’t been deemed the victor (yet), it definitely looks to have been on the wrong end of a Russian cyber attack. Apparently, the contestants have already been selected, and users can surf on over and place their vote for the single most repulsive machine in the mix. Thankfully, the two winners (audience “favorite” and editor’s choice) will each receive a brand new HP Pavilion dv2699 Special Edition lappie, which we fully expect will be treated just as poorly as the rig it’s replacing.

Track your typing skills with this USB Speedometer

Friday, February 29th, 2008

I think that I was born to be a writer, looking back it’s obvious really. First, I’ve always had horrible handwriting, which means I could have become either a doctor or a writer, and since I had no desire for an extra 10 years in school, there wasn’t much of a chance for being a doctor. When my school finally received new computers they began testing our typing skills, which I excelled at. We had boring typing games to track out WPM count, nothing cool like this cool USB Speedometer.

I honestly don’t know how many words per minute I can type anymore, as it’s been a long time since I really cared. I type fast enough to keep up with my thoughts most of the time (which either means I’m a fast typer or a slow thinker) and I’m cool with that. However, I’m almost positive that I’d never be able to hit the top speed on this gadget. The highest WPM it registers is 260, which is 48 higher than the world record. If you want to impress yourself with your extreme tying skills, this gadget will set you back $39.

There comes a time in every cube-dweller’s life, when he or she has to take the law into his or her hands. Maybe it’s finding out that stooge from marketing has stolen your last pencil…again! Or perhaps you’re tired of having your office moved repeatedly. Well, it’s time to draw a line in the low pile carpet. “No more,” you’ll cry as you stand your ground. With a Nerf Maverick by your side, you will prevail.

LINC Concept Phone Built to Evolve

Friday, February 29th, 2008

The proposed LINC phone is an intriguing concept to parse, as it makes claims to both technological and ecological superiority. Basic idea is that you lease your phone instead of owning it. After a year, you send your current handset back to LINC, which builds the phones for easy, automated disassembly to simplify component recycling. You get a sparkly new phone with the latest features and your account settings already transferred.

The anti-obsolescence insurance will no doubt be reassuring to geeks, and the built-for-recycling aspect is certainly laudable. But wouldn’t it be more environmentally responsible to just grit your teeth and keep using your old phone?

Denon ASD3N Denon iPod Dock

The Denon ASD3N is the perfect way to simplify your media collection. Rather than having some of you music on your computer, some of your music on your ipod, some of your music on CDs, and some of your music in your home theater system, keep it all connected. The ASD3N connects to a computer via an ethernet cable to transmit music from your computer to your home audio set-up, or can charge Apple iPods while playing media from them. The ASD3N is the perfect to get your music (and even photos and videos) organized.

Satellite radio merger in limbo

Friday, February 29th, 2008

The much hyped merger of Satellite radio providers XM and Sirius has stalled, and the deadline is looming. The original deal was struck on February 19, 2007 and the termination date is Saturday. Sirius is desperate for the merger but regulators have still not approved the plan. Sirius CEO Mel Karmazin said he expects the boards of both companies to meet to extend that deadline. The DOJ seems to be stuck on the question of whether the merger would result in a monopoly. The answer to most is no, given that most satellite radio usage happens in cars, where DVD players, iPods, and free radio are also options. Since February 20, 2007, Sirius shares have fallen 22% to $3.05, while XM shares have sunk 15% to $13.13.

iriver E100 hits Europe

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video

iriver unveiled a whole bunch of hotness at this year’s CES, so you’ll have to pick your next player from them wisely… lest you end up buying the whole lot. That said, we’re not sure the E100 would be our first choice, but it’s certainly no slouch in the looks or specs departments, and it’s hitting the market well before most of those fancier players. There’s a 2.4-inch QVGA display, built-in stereo speakers and a microSD slot to supplement the included memory. Audio codec support includes FLAC, MP3, WMA, ASF and OGG, while you can manage MPEG-4, WMV9 and XVID for video. There’s also a mic, FM radio and line-in for acquiring audio. The E100 is available now, with prices starting at €79.00 ($119 US) for a 2GB player, and ramping on up to €129.00 ($194 US) for the 8GB.

Sprint jumps on the unlimited cell phone plan bandwagon

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Sprint has joined AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile in offering unlimited cell phone calling plans. Sprint’s first unlimited plan is $99 and includes *everything*, not just calls, but data and PTT (Push to Talk) if you have one of those phones. Sprint is certainly pushing its competitors harder, and they must if they are to stem the financial bleeding they’ve been experiencing.

Ah, competition. It may be a cliche, but it really is amazing for consumers, although these price breaks and the possible ensuing price war may sink 1 or more of these cell providers before this is all over. But then again, it’s never over.
