DisplayLink releases beta drivers for OS X

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Folks hanging on the Mac side of life have surely been waiting in tense anticipation for DisplayLink to become OS X friendly, for like, ever. As promised, the first drivers have emerged in order to give Intel-based Macs (yes, macbook air and mac mini are included) the ability to connect with up to four monitors over USB. Granted, the beta software has no 2D acceleration and no OpenGL 3D acceleration, but both limitations are known and will hopefully be ironed out in the final release. So, what are you waiting for? Tap the read link below to get your download on — but be sure to read up on the documentation before forging ahead without a care in the world.

Yahoo Shine targets more women bloggers

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Yahoo reportedly will launch a new website called ”Shine” today. The website features content from the best writers and bloggers in women’s publishing. This could very well be another social network but no, the website is considered as a vertical similar similar to Yahoo Sports, Finance, News, or Entertainment.

Shine is the first site from Yahoo to target an audience, more specifically the women, because Yahoo sites usually are niched. Since studies show that more females blog more than males do, Shine could become a success unlike the Green and Tech sites from Yahoo. Yahoo said that there are almost 40 million women Yahoo users ages 25 to 54 that could benefit from this new website.

Publishers and sources of Shine’s content will include fashion websites Epicurious.com and Style.com and magazines Good Housekeeping, Glamour, InStyle, Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar, and Women’s Health. Right now, there are 8 editors, all women, tasked as editors of various Shine sections. Shine is more than just a fashion blog as the ladies of Shine describe the new website. The ladies wrote:

“So what you won’t find on Shine: Advice on how to please your man and diets that urge you to “lose 10 pounds fast!” What you will find on Shine: Why buying an expensive “It Bag” is a waste of money; how to make a meal in 30 minutes; how to make a face mask out of last night’s 30-minute meal (okay not really but you get the idea), how to de-stress at your desk; sharp, opinionated takes on the news; and finally, that you aren’t alone in your “Dancing with the Stars” obsession.”

This isn’t the first website of its kind since Glam.com and iVillage are already attempting to be serious, fun, and stylish at the same time. However, Yahoo Shine’s partners and editors make all the big difference.

Multi-Screwdriver Torch

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Now here’s a torch that does more than light up your path whenever the power fails (which isn’t too often these days) - the Multi-Screwdriver Torch. Not only will you be able to find your way through a blanket of darkness, it features a whole host of interchangeable screwdriver heads that will be able to cater for most DIY projects without the need for a whole bunch of different screwdrivers. Just make sure you don’t lose these heads though, as there won’t be any individual replacements. Instead, you’ll have to fork out $17 for a whole new Multi-Screwdriver Torch instead.

Technology week in view: 31st March 2008

Monday, March 31st, 2008

It is April tomorrow and I’m still wondering where February went? Time is a precious commodity these days and keeping up to date with various interesting web sites can be a challenge in itself and I often recommend that people should look for a feed or subscribe facility on a web site and use a feed reader program such as Google Reader. If you are unsure what a feed is this explanation may help: What you need to know about feeds. This way you can get the information you are interested in, delivered to you, as and when it is written and you don’t have to keep visiting many web sites.

I have been busy with two things this week, the first is to migrate my various Blogs to the new Wordpress 2.5 CMS (Content Management System) which is proving really useful and something that is even crossing over from my social activities to business activities. If you have ever felt tempted to start a blog but had doubts or felt it was a waste of time then give this post a read Why Blogging is not a waste of time.

The other thing I have been working on has been looking into the world of Backing Up (and Restoring) XP Drivers after I spent hours trying to find Where I put that driver disc? gadgets need all sorts of driveRs but faced with a rebuild of your computer do you know where all your drivers are? Are they on disc? Did you download them? I am looking into driver backing up and restore utilities and I will let you know how I get on.

I do like a good gadget (why else would I be here!?) and I got given a really interesting gadgety gift recently. It is a portable solar powered charger that converts into a device about the size of a chunky mobile phone - I am giving it a good test to see if it’s really up to the job and will report my findings in a future post.

On a lighter note, Brother Mouse Matt has been dreaming of working in the city - but is the grass really greener on the other side? And where is the mythical land of ‘ninetofive’. Keep well and don’t get caught out by any of those April Fools Day jokes tomorrow!

I LOVE YOU MAGIC BEANSTALK

I LOVE YOU MAGIC BEANSTALK

This is a Luckies classic. Just open the can, add water and hey presto, a few days later rises up a real, living beanstalk. That’s pretty cool, but here’s the freaky bit; one of the leaves is embossed with those 3 little words - ‘I love You’.  Wow. How? Nature or nurture? Who knows, but it makes a cool gift. Comes in a free counter display.

Asus Eee PC with Windows XP coming to Best Buy in April

Monday, March 31st, 2008

The long rumored Windows XP-based Eee PC will soon be hitting the market here in the US. With all the recent commotion about the Eee PC 900, the XP rumors had seemed to die down just a bit. The updated Eee PC will keep the same specs as the current Linux-based model, except for the OS, which will be Windows XP Home.

Perhaps the best news; the Eee PC will keep the same $399 price tag and we will not have too long to grab one for yourself, they will be available at Best Buy locations beginning April 9, 2008.

According to the folks over at Laptop, Asus is planning on also bundling a 4GB SD card in with the notebook to offer some additional storage space. With the small internal 4GB SSD, after Windows XP is installed and with just a few other programs they were left with just 153MB of free space.

Oxygen Doghouse

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Now is this a wacky idea or what - we’ve seen Oxygen Bars for humans, but an Oxygen Doghouse? Yes, your pooch no longer has to feel left out smelling foul odors such as sweaty feet, moldy shoes, and turd from a rival pooch among others from knee level downwards. Just plop him/her into the Oxygen Doghouse to gain a fresh experience.. The Oxygen Doghouse is best used for a really sick dog as a higher content of oxygen in the air has been proven to aid recovery from illnesses.

Sling Media Nods SlingPlayer’s Inclusion to iPhone

Monday, March 31st, 2008

For those unknown, SlingMedia makes the SlingBox, a place-shifting video streaming box that allows you to stream video content wirelessly. Sling Media had been looking a way to get their coveted software on the iPhone since last April, and finally, they have to pulled it off. Apple’s topical release of the SDK allows developers to get the software onto the iPhone. So, TV fans will soon be watching their favourite shows live on Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch over an Internet connection.

Furthermore, due to its exclusive Wi-Fi connection, the ipod touch could provide a better platform for Slingplayer. The latter shows interest in iphone chiefly because running the app over the EDGE network normally results in below optimal show. With the 3G iPhone coming soon; it is the minimum required connection for the application. No sooner Apple officially releases the new firmware; we could see a new app from Sling Media in the list.
