Select AT&T stores selling refurbished iPhones?

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

Oh sure, Apple’s been offering up a couple of refurbished iPhones on its own web store for some time now, but actually finding one in stock has proven to be quite a challenge. Nevertheless, a purported internal memo has explained that select AT&T stores in the New England region (sorry, rest of the solar system) will be stocking refurbished iPhones for $199 (4GB) and $249 (8GB) — of course, the deal only applies to new activations. Has anyone actually seen this go down first hand? We wonder how quickly it’ll be before this offer bleeds out from the Northeast.

Heads Up Display via ‘Bionic’ Contact Lenses

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

Cool. That pretty much sums up how amazing this new potential technology sounds. Researchers at the University of Washington have demonstrated how using microscopic scale manufacturing techniques, they were able to create a contact lens with a electronic circuit, as well as lights.

This is yet another one of those advances that is predicted by art in television/movies/comics/novels before making a ‘real’ entrance. With nanotechnology continuing to make strides, this shouldn’t be a surprise, but placing a device like this in such a sensitive part of the body takes another important step.

Now think about the possibilities for this technology. No large pieces of headgear resting on your head and around you eyes; HUDs would be as simple as inserting some lenses. If (and when) they embed wireless capabilities into them, you could access up to date information without having to look at another device. Just look straight ahead.

Or how about adaptively adjusting the strength of your lens, or clearing up the image and getting rid of discolorations or debris in what you see? Of course, I can’t wait to get bionic eye spam!

And you thought driving while talking on your cell phone was bad… just wait.

If you just so happen to have a spare 35mm slide viewer gathering all sorts of dust in your basement and one of Apple’s latest nanos, we’ve discovered a perfect way to spend your weekend and exercise your DIY muscle. Granted, the Nanoscope has been around the block a time or two, but that doesn’t weaken its geek factor one iota. Essentially, you simply modify said viewer to accommodate the nano, add in a set of speakers and kick back to enjoy your stored movie files in larger-than-originally-intended fashion. Really, it’s way cooler than it sounds — check out the video after the jump.

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

It’s no secret that Rock Band hardware has experienced its fair share of failures, and while the kick pedal has caused the lion’s share of grief on the drums, we’re pretty sure at least some of you out there have thoroughly ruined those heads. If so, the similarly bummed folks over at Official Xbox Magazine have a possible solution. We’ll be honest — the “fix” described in the read link below isn’t for the faint of heart, but if you’re too impatient to take your problems up with Harmonix, find the smallest screwdriver you can and have at it.

New Magellan Maestro 5340 ready for pre-order

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

One of the best and most expensive GPS’ in the industry, plus the most expensive GPS’ Magellan has to offer, the Maestro 5340, will be ready for pre-order for $1200. If you want the basic version, meaning internet will not be included, then it will only cost $1000. You’re probably thinking, who in their right mind would buy such a GPS, but really if you have the money, then it’s worth it.

Basically, it comes with a 5-inch touch screen, text-to-speech capabilities, live traffic updates, Bluetooth connectivity, better voice command options for menus and addresses, 3D landmarks and 1,400 other buildings which are also 3D. Furthermore, it acts like a PMP because it comes with a mp3 player, video playback, new and better screen and case, and OneTouch interface. Now, the most notable feature of this GPS is its GPRS technology, basically it will deliver advanced Google local search and internet access.

Like previously mentioned, it sells for $1200 if you include all above features and only $1000 if you take out the GPRS option. No word on how much exactly the GPRS services will cost, but it is set to ship in late April, so expect more details then.
