En-Twyn’s En-Compass incorporates Powerline into socket

CeBIT and Powerline seem to have a thing for one another, and sure enough, this year we’re seeing yet another firm storm onto the scene in an attempt to advance the flagging technology. London-based En-Twyn set up shop in Germany to showcase its En-Compass, which doesn’t require any special wall cutouts and differs from most other Powerline systems by packing its electronics on the backside. In other words, you won’t have any unsightly adapters protruding from the front. Beyond that, everything else works as expected — Ethernet signals travel over your existing home wiring setup — but unfortunately, the product is still stuck in prototype stage at the moment.

Etch A Sketch clock automatically draws, redraws time

Automating Etch A Sketch units to pull off all sorts of mesmerizing tricks is certainly not new, but angelabuilds’ beautifully created Etch A Sketch clock truly is a notch above the rest. Reportedly, it was built upon the Arduino platform and obviously references a few other EAS masterpieces, but we really can’t think of a better wall clock for the true geek. Click on through to check out a video of the unit drawing 11:41 and moving on to 11:42 — seriously, watching the seconds tick away has never been more riveting.

The Cloudbook modding begins; enter the “Dreambook”

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

We saw the Eee PC pick up an incredible, almost cult like following and with that came more mods and hacks than most of us could even imagine. It has taken some time, the Cloudbook has gotten off to a slow start, but that seems to be coming to an end. A decent community is starting to get going behind the Cloudbook, albeit not as large or devoted as the Eee PC has, but still its getting there and I am sure it will continue to grow with time. With the community getting behind the Cloudbook we are beginning to see some cool new mods, along with some tips and tricks that make the gOS-based ultra-portable a little more user friendly.

Being dubbed the “Dreambook” a user by the name of Azazel has added some very cool mods including a touchscreen display, internal 4-port USB hub, a GPS unit and 4GB’s of internal memory via a flash memory stick. In this case the internal webcam suffered and was removed due to the need for some extra space, but with all those other goodies on the inside I am sure its very easy to live without a 0.3-megapixel webcam. Very good news on the “internal” Cloudbook front, according to Azazel “there is a lot of room to work with!” Sounds good to us, while I am not quite brave enough to tear into mine, I am excited to see what the future brings.

If you are interested in the Cloudbook or looking for some cool stuff the user forums over at Cloudbooker is a great place to check out the budding community.

Eurocom’s M860TU Montebello 15.4-inch laptop rocks the Centrino 2

In case you missed it, it was Eurocom’s Phantom-X that managed to swipe that “fastest tested laptop” mark from the MacBook Pro last year — and totally ruin a perfectly good commercial. Now the company is back for more with the M860TU Montebello 15.4-incher. We’ll have to wait for the benchmarks to see how this one stacks up against the recent crop of Penryn laptops, but what’s new here is that the Centrino 2 “Montevina” chipset is under the hood, which should support faster Penryn processors, lower power consumption and some new fancy security features. Other specs on the M860TU include a 15.4-inch 1920 x 1200 LCD, 512MB NVIDIA 8800M GTX graphics (with a future option for 9xxxM GTX chips once they’re announced), 4GB of RAM, HSDPA and external eSATA and HDMI plugs. Yeah, pretty hot. No word on price, but the laptop is slated to ship May 1st.

iPod nano sparks bedroom fire, no humans harmed

Oddly enough, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen a product proudly designed in Cupertino erupt, but it’s pretty safe to say this story could have had a much more tragic ending. Reportedly, an ipod nano owner recently awoke to a blaring fire alarm around 2:00AM, only to find his beloved PMP wrapped in flames on the bedroom floor. Thankfully, the fire was tiny enough to be extinguished without any major trouble, and no substantial damage of property or human flesh was tallied. As of now, we’ve no idea if the unit simply exploded or if surrounding circumstances are at least partly to blame, but you can bet your bottom dollar that be sleeping with one eye open (and on our media players) tonight.

Legend Of The King Puzzle

Legend Of The King Puzzle
This is a box, a puzzle box that’s mind-bendingly, gut-wrenchingly infuriating in its construction. All it asks of you is to release the scroll that’s hidden inside. And that can’t be too much to ask of a grown-up, can it? Go on. We dare you.

Everex Cloudbook; Now available at NewEgg, select in-store Wal-Mart locations

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

While the Cloudbook may have gotten off to a rough very rough start, it seems we have some traction building. Initially you had to either make that purchase at ZaReason (who quickly dropped the Cloudbook after all those initial problems) or by placing your order, for delivery only at Wal-Mart.

Since then the reviews are starting to get a little better, while it may not be a perfect device (what is), we are starting to see some positive points being mentioned. With that the availability is also getting better. The Everex Cloudbook is now available at online retailer NewEgg and is also available at select Wal-Mart locations for in-store purchases. The Cloudbook retains the $399 retail price at both NewEgg and Wal-Mart.

Google; finding it for the cure

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

Did you know that doing a web search can also help find a cure for breast cancer? One site powered by Google is the new Search The Cure started by JDMedia. On this site 75% of the revenue generated goes towards fighting breast cancer, and you’ll be able to see on the site how much in donations has been made. Another site also powered by Google is Find It Girlfriend, which has links throughout to The Breast Cancer Site, on which just a click will help fund mammograms for the poor. Find It Girlfriend is designed specifically for girls with its bright pink background, so if you have more than one computer in your house, you could have Find It Girlfriend be the homepage on the chick’s computer and Search The Cure be the homepage on the dude’s computer.

These sites are a really easy way to help fight breast cancer. Using a search engine is something you would do anyway, and it doesn’t cost anything. Even if, unlike me, you’ve never known any victims of breast cancer, you can still show some support. So let’s hear it for JDMedia and Find It Girlfriend for coming up with these sites. Here’s hoping that they can raise a lot of money for breast cancer.
