Rogers announces iPhone coming to Canada

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Rogers Wireless has officially confirmed that the iphone will finally be headed into Canada. In a simple announcement, CEO Ted Rogers stated that the iPhone will be available on Rogers “later this year,” and sadly left it at that.

“We can’t tell you any more about it right now, but stay tuned.”

It’s nice to have the confirmation, but there are some major details left out, such as an availability date and any plan details. While here in the US we are eagerly awaiting the launch of the rumored 3G iPhone, our Northern neighbors are finally going to land a iPhone. While a date has not been confirmed, the rumor has it becoming available during the summer months.

Microsoft’s Mac BU releases Messenger for Mac 7

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

A lot of people don’t realize that Microsoft has a dedicated business unit (BU) just for Mac products. The BU previously released Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 and is now announcing the release of Messenger for Mac 7. Some highlights from the new release include:

  • support for Mac OS X Bonjour instant networking technology
  • new contact list search tool
  • ability to give contacts a nickname, even when their screen name changes
  • Corporate enhancements: increased support for Office Communications Server 2007; support for multi-party audio and video conferencing

I tend to use iChat on my MacBook, but I know I’m in the minority there. I’ll have to give this latest version a go and see what other features it offers. I really like the idea of giving a contact a nickname and not having to worry about them changing their screen name. I’m also interested in seeing what kinds of UI enhancements have made the cut, since I’m really impressed with the Mac-specific stuff bottled in the latest version of Office.

  • iPhone finally coming to Canada

It seemed like it would never happen, but the impossible has occurred: Apple’s iPhone is coming to Canada. The news was quietly slipped into telecom giant Rogers’ latest earnings report, with the simple statement that the company was “thrilled to announce” a “deal with Apple to bring the iphone to Canada later this year.” Apparently, lips are sealed on all other details, but we’ll keep you posted as news gets our way.

    TAC Universal PS2-to-PS3 Converter

    Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Currently, Activision and Harmonix don’t seem to be too comfortable with one another in order to implement broad hardware compatibility where Rock Band and Guitar Hero controllers are concerned, but Ant Commandos has a new converter that allows you to maximize the use of your old PS2 axes, regardless of whether they are wired or wireless. The TAC Universal PS2-to-PS3 Converter is compatible with PS3 Rock Band and PS2/PS3 GHIII, and functions with just about every PS2 axe to date. Only meant for hardcore Guitar Hero/Rock Band fans despite its meager $20 price tag.

MacBook Air hacked with internal EV-DO — finally lives up to its name

    Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

by Thomas Ricker, posted Apr 29th 2008 at 8:14AM

One of the most surprising things about the launch of an ultra-portable laptop dubbed “Air” by Apple wasn’t its thinness but the lack of an embedded WWAN radio. No more, at least if you’re not intimidated by smoldering solder and warranty violations. Jordan Bunnell has posted a step-by-step of his success at integrating a Verizon USB727 Aircard into the macbook air chassis thanks to the MBA’s previously unused USB controllers discovered on the system board. While the EVDO signal (and speed) has appreciably degraded from its externally attached origins, Jordan is still pulling 1,400 to 1,700kbps downloads and 380kbps uploads — something which might be improved with antenna tweaks. Regardless, those speeds are significantly faster than the 0kbps stock MBA owners experience.

iPod building block speakers keep your dock connector company

    Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Apr 29th 2008 at 9:13AM

Too busy to bother with external speakers for your ipod? Still can’t shake that fascination with colored blocks after all these decades? Take heart, young buck, as the iPod building block speakers can keep that kid in you alive for a good bit longer — though we aren’t sure the audiophile in you will be too pleased. These non-powered “drivers” get amped after being plugged into an iPod’s dock connector (sorry, iphone users), but curiously enough, they only arrive in a single 2.5- x 1- x .75-inch form, which doesn’t exactly fit flush against the last-gen nano. Nevertheless, those giddy about the notion of claiming a few as their own can pick ‘em up in yellow, white, red, black, blue and green for $24.99 apiece.
