USB Drill Core Drive

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Talk about a really wacky USB flash drive design - this one comes in the form of a drill core, with the drive’s casing being made up of hard rubber. I suppose this means there is a certain degree of shock proof with each purchase, although I wouldn’t recommend you drop this from great heights on purpose. Despite the $47 price tag, it comes with just 1GB of internal memory which is a blatant ripoff IMHO.

The Nymph Lamp looks a bit bug-like

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

As an adult I rarely find bugs to be cute, as a kid maybe, but it seems I’ve lost that love for brightly colored insects.  Well even if this Nymph lamp is modeled after a bug, I still in this particular case find him to be cute.  It was created by Site Specific Design, which is an interior and furniture design company that is based out of Brooklyn, New York.  The lamp would be great to add a quirky twist to any modern home.  Especially with the bright white coloring for the body and legs.

The body itself is made of a two-part fiberglass mold with a white lacquer finish.  The legs are made of 5/8” hollow steel tubes, no two legs are exactly alike either.  Each one’s curve is unique to it’s specific location.  The light cover is made of Corian and overall it is topped off with a white powder coat finish.   It measures 19in tall by 15in wide by 31in long.  The lamp will end up costing you $2,600.  Which means it’s not just any novelty lighting, but overly expensive novelty lighting.

Gordon Luk Warns Us Of Another Email Exploit

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Just when I thought I had heard it all, Gordon warns me of a new email exploit that looks like it’s from CNN and pretends to load Flash on your computer. You can see the whole story here:

  • getluky.net » Blog Archive » Almost got owned by a fake CNN today. =[

However, for all the cues that were available, the writer of this exploit put in an amount of effort into crafting an authentic-feeling damnit-I-have-to-upgrade-Flash-again experience for an average Internet user that nearly fooled me. If it hadn’t been for my tendency to give up on content rather than install yet another Flash upgrade, I might have been caught hook, line, and sinker.

How many times have you chosen okay on a window without even reading it? I know I have MANY times. I probably would have fallen for this one.

One step you can take to avoid an exploit like this is to go directly to Adobe’s website and install the latest version of Flash right now:

  • Adobe Flash Player Download Center

Then when something suggests that you might not have the latest version, you will KNOW that you do.

BlackBerry Kickstart is actually the BlackBerry Pearl 8220?

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Well it looks like that Kickstart, you know RIM’s first venture into the clamshell market will not be coming after all. It seems that there is no Kickstart, at least by name that is, the handset is still the real deal, but according to these latest leaked promo images, we have been calling it by an incorrect name.

It turns out that the Kickstart will actually be the blackberry Pearl 8220. Strange, although it does make you wonder if the current candybar style of the Pearl will be going away. Personally I think RIM would have had a better intro with a new name, after all it is the first BlackBerry of its flippin kind. On another note, its always interesting to see the internal sales documents, because after all how else would we learn that the primary customers for the Kickstart Pearl 8220 would be “young urbanites,” “multi-tasking women,” and “mobile men,” good stuff.

Lets just hope the early information about the fabled $49.99 price tag holds a little more accurate than the name information.

Lars Ulrich just about confirms Guitar Hero: Metallica

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Ever since Activision released Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, rumors have been circulating about the other bands that might get the GH treatment. Among the most popular names floating around are The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. And while they might have their own Guitar Hero game in time (fingers crossed), it seems that next up in line is the legendary thrash metal band, Metallica.

Drummer and RIAA co-conspirator Lars Ulrich all but confirmed rumors with a statement he made to MTV News:

There’s an Aerosmith game out there that’s super successful, and if somebody’s gonna follow that up…we’re talking, and its exciting, and the people at ‘Guitar Hero’ and Activision are rapidly becoming our best new friends in the world. You can put the rest of it together yourself.

Sounds like a done deal. Though Lars might just be getting his panties all in a bundle to promote Metallica’s upcoming album, Death Magnetic. You can use your own powers of logic and deduction to solve the rest of this mystery. No need to call out Scooby Doo and the crew. This is sounding pretty much in the bag. Although, this does come from a band whom before every album claims to be “going back to their roots”. We can only hope, Lars. We can only hope.

Violight iZap UV Toothbrush Sanitizer - keep your toothbrush clean

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

If you’re a road warrior, then you really need to think about investing in one of these. The iZap is a travel toothbrush sanitizer that contains a germicidal UV bulb that eliminates up to 99.9% of germs. The bulb turns on as soon as the lid to the case is closed, sanitizes your toothbrush for about 6 minutes and then automatically shuts off.

Of course, you already know that toothbrushes are just breeding grounds for germs and bacteria, which is one of the reasons you should replace them often, but you can’t exactly replace them after every use without being related to a Rockerfeller. So do yourself a favor and pick up an iZap.

Gimme!

A surprising new source of renewable energy: Kites

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Yes, I’m serious. Yes, I am now singing “Let’s go fly a kite, up to the highest heights” in my signature off-key way.

The Guardian newspaper reports that scientists from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, one of Europe’s top research institutions, were able to harness wind energy by flying a 10-sq metre (107.6 sq feet) kite tethered to a generator. They produced ten kilowatts of power, enough to power ten family homes. And I bet they had a great time, too!

The scientists now have plans to harness even more power from an even bigger kite. Could we soon see fields of kites flying high, instead of the traditional wind farm? Let’s hope so.

Hulu updates HD gallery with 720p TV episodes

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Hulu first added their HD gallery back towards the end of last year and sadly it has remained pretty empty since. However, I suppose good things come to those who wait, and are patient. Hulu has just added a little extra content to the gallery, the new content comes in the form of 720p quality TV shows. There is now a selection of full length episodes of Heroes, 30 Rock, 24 and The Office.

Hulu has still not added any full length movies, so aside from the few available shows, the overall content is very light. Just some movie clips, a few nature and documentary titles and a few sports episodes.

Hopefully with some time, the HD gallery will fill out a little more. One word of advice though, the extra quality does need some extra computing power, system requirements are a 2.5Mbps Internet connection, as well as an Intel Pentium 4 3GHz processor (or equivalent) on Windows or an Intel Core Duo 1.83GHz or faster processor on a Mac.
