Laptop Cool Table from Arbella

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

While laptops are great devices to tote around, sometimes we do wish they can be as comfortable to use as an actual desktop. Desktop replacement models aren’t exactly the most portable devices, which is why the Laptop Cool Table from Arbella works great if you want more comfort when working on your laptop, no matter where you are.

The Laptop Cool table was developed to make the laptop more comfortable to use. The table instantly turns your laptop in to a portable desktop by raising your computer with quick adjusting legs to a comfortable level. Lifting the laptop up relieves your sore wrists and back and also keeps the hot battery from burning your legs. Built in USB fans help cool your laptop and prolong its life. Lightweight and compact design allows it to go from the boardroom to the dorm room and anywhere else you roam.

There is no word on pricing though, so you’ll have to contact them to find out.

HP Multi Touch Tablet Reviewed. Result: Not Bad

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

HP’s Pavilion-alike Touchsmart tx2z has been thoroughly groped by Laptop Mag, with the sticky-fingered results (above) posted for our voyeuristic pleasure. The $1300 tx2z is HP’s first consumer level tablet notebook and features an AMD Turion X2 processor (hence the name) and a variety of custom finishes.

But the important part is the screen, a 12″ capacitive swiveller. The capacitive screen, like that of the iphone, allows multi touch gestures, and the swivelling hinge means that those gestures might actually be useful as you don’t need to hold your arms out straight to use it.

So, how does it fare? According to reviewer Joanna Stern, the touch works great, but is still limited by drivers. The advantage of the iPhone is that it was conceived from the beginning to be controlled by touching the screen. Any PC maker needs to hack together custom controls for any existing applications that aren’t built with touch support. So, swiping up and down works fine for scrolling web pages (despite a spotty Wi-Fi connection), and “double tapping the screen and then drawing the letter M, brings up the multimedia touch panel”.

The conclusion? Promising, but flawed. There’s one oddity to Sterns’ review which makes us think that the Laptop Mag folks have access to some secret, thought control tech:

Since the debut of the Apple iPhone, people want to use their fingers to control their technology

Just what have they been using up ’til now, Joanna?

Hands-On With the HP TouchSmart tx2z [Laptop Mag. thanks, Avram!]

LG’s hot new touchscreen at AT&T

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Check out this one: LG’s Incite.  The 3G world phone has some impressive features as well as an interesting price tag: $199.  The lineup of $199 touchscreen phones in the AT&T stable is getting crowded.  So how is this one different?

The Incite features Windows Mobile 6.1, so it plays well with the MS Office docs, Outlook and the like.  It’s camera is a 3mp jobber and the 3” display has 240×480 QVGA going for it.  A bonus stylus tells you fingers may or may not be the best input device.  As a note, the Samsung Epix also offered a stylus and I found most tasks (save for clicking the close box in the upper left) were easily done with fat fingers.

Interestingly the screen is haptic (a buzzing is made so you can feel when pressing keys) and the onscreen keyboard comes in two varieties: a basic QWERTY keyboard in landscape or a 20 key keyboard in portait.  The switching between the two is automatic based on the devices orientation.

Other bonus features include aGPS, WiFi and Bluetooth; staples for any business user.  Also in there is AT&T’s video share, “the first-ever service in the U.S. that allows users to share live video over wireless devices while participating in a voice call.“  The unit has an SD memory slot that is 16GB card compatible according to the press release but the AT&T site disagrees, saying it can handle 32GB.

Q66SD, SSD, and HDD, a New Desktop from Jooyon

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

The Korean company Jooyon has released the Q66SD, an interesting new desktop. Powered by an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600, G31 chipset, 2GB of DDR2 and a GeForce 9500GT, it features both a 32GB SSD and a 320GB HDD.

I’m not sure if an SSD is all that good for a desktop, but well… Who knows?

Obama now a YouTube regular

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Barack Obama may have to relinquish his ever-present blackberry for security reasons when he becomes U.S. President in January, but no way will he give up exploiting the digital technology he built his election campaign on. Obama has launched brief weekly talks and will be posting them on YouTube. Among his promises in the first chat: putting $150 billion toward creating 5 million jobs by creating a new green energy economy.

Your response may depend on your politics. You can look at this reaching out as transparency in government - or as plain old politicking, notes Lidija Davis on ReadWriteWeb. Find the video and a link to the transcript of the 3 1/2-minute talk there too.

Trailer for new Star Trek movie

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

I just saw the trailer in its full screen glory and wanted to share with the world. I’m looking forward to this (partial-)reboot of the Star Trek franchise. The trailer hints at a more edgy take on the characters. I’ve already said too much.

Sprint: Plug into widget overload

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

Sprint is all over the place.  They just lost 1.3 million customers, they’ve got their CEO on television yammering about technology, and now they’ve unveiled this thing.  What is it?

It is Sprint’s promotion of its mobile broadband service featuring over 30 widgets.  At random intervals, a woman’s voice will say things like, “Feel free to touch it.“  You can listen to music, mess around with some of the widgets just by clicking on them like the cuckoo clock and be inundated with all kinds of information that you don’t need.

It’s actually a pretty cool way to waste a lot of time.  Does this make you or I want Sprint mobile broadband?  Not really.  It does remind me of Jarvis in the “Iron Man” movie.  I think I’ll go watch that.

See it at Sprint via UneasySilence.
